About ifonica
ifonica designs, delivers and supports the communications infrastructure that businesses and organizations run on every day — business phone systems, UCaaS, contact centre platforms and data centre solutions. Behind a new name is a team with more than 30 years of experience in this industry, and the same core values, products and client relationships our customers have come to expect.
We are not a start-up chasing a runway, and we are not a call-centre-sized enterprise where your work disappears into a backlog. We are an established, stable business where a small technical team has real ownership of real production systems, and where client satisfaction is genuinely the measure of success.
The Opportunity
Ifonica is seeking an experienced Senior VoIP Engineer to serve as a technical leader across our voice infrastructure, customer-facing engineering, and platform operations. This role combines hands-on VoIP/SIP engineering with solution design, carrier and vendor management, documentation, and team leadership. You will act as the primary technical authority for complex client deployments, high-priority escalations, and the UCaaS billing/softswitch platform, while mentoring the broader customer-facing technical team.
What You will Do
Core VoIP Engineering
Design, deploy, and maintain scalable VoIP/SIP infrastructure, including PBX systems, SIP trunks, and call routing configurations.
Monitor system performance, call quality (QoS), and uptime to ensure compliance with SLAs.
Configure and maintain firewalls, NAT, VLANs, and other network elements that support voice traffic.
Manage and support IP phones, softphones, gateways, and other end-user VoIP hardware.
Implement and maintain security best practices across VoIP systems and infrastructure.
Stay current with emerging VoIP, SIP, and unified communications technologies and industry best practices.
Solutions & Scoping: Join sales calls and client meetings to gather project specifications and build custom solutions.
Product Collaboration: Work with internal software and BI teams to design, test, and launch new features for clients.
Documentation: Write and maintain user guides, manuals, PBX cheat sheets, feature documentation, and video guides.
Subject Matter Expert: Serve as the team’s SME for firewalls, SIP routing, and VoIP setups.
Technical Lead & Contact: Act as the main technical contact for large projects and top-tier Ifonica clients, especially during complex issues or outages.
Troubleshooting: Read and analyze Wireshark captures and SIP traces to identify and resolve network issues.
Carrier Management: Handle technical escalations and troubleshooting with upstream and downstream carriers.
Communication: Translate complex technical problems into clear, easy-to-understand summaries for both technical and non-technical audiences.
Hardware & Product Testing: Evaluate new products and hardware to check for fit, compatibility, and performance.
Team Leadership: Lead and mentor the customer-facing technical team — tracking workload, sharing updates, delegating tasks, and keeping everyone aligned.
Customer Advocacy: Take full ownership of client issues to ensure that, no matter the issue, clients get an answer — even if it’s not the news they were hoping for — regardless of where the fault lies.
UCaaS Platform Management
Products & Tariffs: Create custom products and billing tariffs within the UCaaS platform.
Testing & Quality Control: Test new and existing features to ensure everything works properly.
Vendor Escalations: Report bugs and issues to UCaaS, track fixes, and verify solutions.
Upgrades: Build and run pre- and post-upgrade testing checklists.
Health Monitoring: Monitor system performance from the customer side to spot anomalies early.
Custom Workarounds: Build and share workarounds for features that aren’t natively supported or that don’t work as expected.
Best Practices: Set up standard workflows and naming conventions for onboarding clients and services.
Advanced Support: Deliver fast, effective solutions for complex, high-priority customer issues.
What You Bring
We care more about demonstrated capability than a checklist. If you meet most of the following and can show us work you are proud of, we want to hear from you.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, or a related field — or equivalent hands-on experience.
5+ years of experience in VoIP/telecommunications engineering, with demonstrated experience in a senior or lead technical role.
Proven experience supporting enterprise or carrier-grade voice environments, including production troubleshooting and client-facing support.
Direct experience with a UCaaS platform (or a comparable billing/softswitch platform) strongly preferred.
Strong working knowledge of VoIP protocols, including SIP, RTP, H.323, and MGCP.
Experience with PBX platforms such as Asterisk, FreePBX, Cisco Unified Communications Manager, or similar.
Hands-on proficiency with Wireshark and SIP trace analysis for network troubleshooting.
Solid understanding of networking fundamentals: firewalls, NAT, VLANs, QoS, and routing as they apply to voice traffic.
Experience managing SIP trunking and carrier relationships (upstream and downstream).
Familiarity with monitoring and diagnostic tools for voice network performance.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences.
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with sound judgment under pressure during outages or escalations.
Demonstrated leadership and mentoring skills, with experience guiding a technical team.
High degree of ownership and customer-first mindset.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, particularly in documentation.
Nice to have
Cisco CCNA/CCNP (Collaboration)
CompTIA Network+ or Security+
Certified VoIP Engineer (CVE) or equivalent vendor certification
ITIL Foundation (an asset)
How you work
Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with real attention to detail.
Able to work independently, prioritize sensibly, and say when something needs more time.
Clear communicator — comfortable explaining technical trade-offs to non-technical colleagues.
Comfortable being accountable for production systems.
Being Straight With You About the Role
Two things worth knowing before you apply, so nobody is surprised later:
This role is on-site in the Greater Toronto Area. Our systems and the teams you will work with are here, and we have found that proximity matters for this particular role. Day-to-day scheduling is flexible; the expectation of being in the office is not.
There is an on-call component. These are production systems that our clients depend on. On-call is shared, infrequent, and we invest in monitoring and automation specifically so that nights and weekends stay quiet. We will be candid about the current volume during the interview process.
What We Offer
Competitive salary: Based on experience and demonstrated skill.
Comprehensive health coverage: copay withextended health, dental and vision.
Paid time off: vacation, plus paid personal, religious and sick days you are actually encouraged to use.
Real work-life balance: We do not run on crunch, and we do not treat evenings as spare capacity.
Stability: an established business with 30+ years in the industry and long-standing client relationships — not a company reinventing itself every two quarters.
Ownership and visibility: a small team where your work is visible to the people making decisions, and where you can see the effect of what you build.
Modernization runway: genuine appetite for improving the platform — you will not be told to leave it as it is.
Our Hiring Process
Application review — we read every application.
Introductory call (approximately 30 minutes) with our hiring manager.
On-site meeting with the team you would be working alongside.
References and offer.
We aim to move from first conversation to decision within three weeks, and we will tell you where you stand at each step.

We are an established, stable business where a small technical team has real ownership of real production systems, and where client satisfaction is genuinely the measure of success.
The Opportunity
We are looking for an experienced MS SQL Database Developer / Administrator to own and evolve the data platform behind our provisioning systems, billing automation, call tracking and enterprise reporting. This is a hands-on hybrid role: part development, part administration, across a heterogeneous environment (SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, MongoDB) with a strong ETL and data warehousing component.
If you like being the person who understands how the data actually flows — who can write the stored procedure, tune the index, build the SSIS package, ship the report, and then explain it to the billing team in plain language — this role will suit you. You will have a direct line to the people making decisions, and the freedom to fix things properly rather than paper over them.
In your first year, you will
Take full ownership of our SQL Server estate — performance, reliability, backup and recovery.
Modernize and consolidate the ETL processes that feed billing and call-tracking data into our data warehouse.
Deliver reporting that the operations and finance teams rely on daily, and retire the manual work it replaces.
Document what is currently tribal knowledge, so the platform is maintainable by more than one person.
What You Will Do
Database development
Design, develop and optimize T-SQL stored procedures, functions, views and triggers supporting business applications.
Review and refactor existing database code for correctness, performance and maintainability.
Write and maintain Python scripts for automation, data validation and integration tasks (e.g. cx_Oracle, pyodbc).
Use version control (Git) to manage database scripts, packages and deployment artifacts.
Database administration and reliability
Administer and maintain SQL Server instances, including performance tuning, indexing strategy and capacity planning.
Implement and manage backup and recovery strategies — full, differential and log backups, disaster recovery planning, and regular restore testing.
Monitor database health, troubleshoot performance issues, and resolve incidents such as transaction log growth, blocking and deadlocks.
Support and integrate data from Oracle and MySQL databases alongside SQL Server environments.
Work with VMware virtualized infrastructure to support database server provisioning and maintenance.
ETL and data warehousing
Build, deploy and maintain SSIS packages to move and transform data across systems.
Design and implement data warehouse architecture using established practices — dimensional modelling, star and snowflake schemas, and slowly changing dimensions.
Develop and maintain robust ETL processes for ingestion, transformation and loading across multiple source systems, with proper error handling, logging and reconciliation.
Reporting and analytics
Design and maintain reporting solutions in SSRS, including parameterized and subscription-based reports.
Build and maintain OLAP cubes and tabular models in SSAS to support analytics and BI reporting.
Partner with stakeholders to make sure reports answer the question that was actually asked.
Collaboration and documentation
Work with engineering, billing and operations teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
Maintain documentation for database schemas, ETL workflows and operational runbooks.
Contribute to change management and release practices for database deployments.
What You Bring
We care more about demonstrated capability than a checklist. If you meet most of the following and can show us work you are proud of, we want to hear from you.
5+ years of experience as a SQL Server Database Developer, Administrator, or a combined role.
Strong T-SQL proficiency — query writing, execution plan reading, performance tuning and indexing.
SSIS — hands-on experience building and maintaining production packages.
SSRS — developing reports and subscriptions.
SSAS — working knowledge of multidimensional or tabular models.
Oracle — practical administration or development experience.
MySQL — familiarity with MySQL environments.
MongoDB – familiarity with and hands-on experience and solid understanding of non-relational/document databases
Python — proficiency for scripting and automation.
Data warehousing — solid understanding of design principles and ETL best practices.
Backup and DR — experience implementing backup strategies and disaster recovery procedures.
VMware — basic familiarity with virtualization concepts.
Education — a degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent practical experience. We treat equivalent experience as equivalent.
Nice to have
Experience in telecom, billing, or call-tracking systems.
Cross-database automation — for example, syncing data between Oracle and SQL Server.
Familiarity with job scheduling tools and monitoring / alerting frameworks.
Exposure to cloud-hosted database environments (Azure SQL, Amazon RDS, or similar).
Experience introducing CI/CD or automated deployment for database changes.
